Baba is You is a puzzle game with an interesting concept that I’ve been playing on-off since early this year. The entire game is based around a clever mechanic of pushing rules apart and together: manipulating the rules and objects of each level.
Here, the level starts with the rules “FLAG IS WIN”, “BABA IS YOU”, “ROCK IS PUSH”, and “SKULL IS DEFEAT”. If you cross the skulls, you are defeated, and have to reset or rewind the level. So how do you get around the skulls and into the ring with the flags? Push the rocks into the “SKULL IS DEFEAT” rule to break it apart, and now the skulls do nothing. The entire game revolves around puzzles and ideas like this. It keeps introducing new elements as you move forward and solve puzzles until you get to some absolutely crazy stuff like this.
I haven’t solved this one yet… I would like to tell you that this is a screenshot of a late game puzzle, but I’m not even sure how far I am in this game. The reason I’ve been playing it on-off is simply because I keep getting stuck and can’t solve any of my unsolved and unlocked puzzles…
I don’t think I’ve ever played a puzzle game this unique and difficult before, though certainly feel free to recommend something if you think I’m wrong.
There’s a lot of creatively and thinking outside the box involved in puzzle solving. For example in one of the tutorial levels, you have to figure out that the solution to the puzzle is to become the wall itself. That in itself sets up the tone and premise of the game really well.
I enjoy the crazy logic manipulation involved in this game though. Once you get to puzzles with “NOT”s and “AND”s it certainly feels a bit like programming, so maybe that’s why I like it. Though sometimes, there’s just so much going on that my mind just completely shuts down.
It definitely feels frustrating at points when I’m just staring at the screen for ages or constantly resetting the level because I have no idea how to solve it. But maybe one day… I’ll actually manage to finish this game.
Thanks for reading! It’s been a while since my last post here so I figured I’d try to write something short for this game because it’s probably one of my favorites this year. One of my other favorite this year has been the recently released Spiritfarer, and I’d like to write about that one when I finish it.
